I am 50 years old. I am losing weight to get down to the proper weight for my size, currently I am about 30 lbs over. The arthritis is severe in both knees but the right one will get a partial replacement on the outside soon. The left is most likely five years away.

You've gotta love Y A&Q sometimes, so many well thought out answers!

I've had knee surgery and I also know of others who have had full knee replacements therefore, a lot depends on how good the surgeon is and how successful the operation is. You will be on physio for a number of months afterwards so do this faithfully, the more diligently you can be the more successful the operation will end up.

Umpiring might be something that has to wait a bit early on, as well, things like stairs and bending, will be difficult but in a matter of weeks you should find it all coming together for you.

Most likely you will find the knee far stronger than its been for some time and if you were bothered with irritation and pain particularly through weather changes, this will likely lessen or even vanish. I think you'll be very glad you got this done and umpiring is going to be possible perhaps next season...give yourself a holiday for this year.

There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to resume life to the fullest after this operation.

Good luck!

It depends on the severity of the damaged knee. Only your doctor can tell you what your limits will be. Then once you re through your recovery period, try what you used to do and see how it feels. Physicians are not always 100% correct in their predictions. Good luck.

Most people your age who receive knee corrective surgery should be able to recover to the point that you should still be able to do ordinary activities. However, you might want to consider officiating not as often as before.
