I got into a political discussion with someone at work one day. It got a little heated as the conversation went on. He was trying to debate me about the war in Iraq and I asked him if he saw something on the news. He says, "I don't watch any news because it distorts the truth."
How in the hell do you get information then? And if he just reads newspapers or magazines, don't they have the capability of distorting as well? After he said that, I couldn't take anything he said seriously anymore. Am I wrong for doing so? Please give me your opinions!

Intelligence is being able to find the truth in the distortion. He is an idiot.

Distorting the truth is the political value of a government run media. However, it must be understood that in most cases it is not a distortion, but rather a selective presentation of which stories to run. I will not defend any media in which the main inducement is to tell me only what they want me to hear or see or form an opinion on. Fortunately our technology is such that we can check out a story, or a highlight, or a lie by going to another source. The main thing is never take anyones word for what is disseminated, if you have an interest check it out yourself.

All media has bias. The best way of gathering information is by reading and watching (if you prefer) different articles/reports on the same event. For TV, maybe watch CBS's news show and then FOX's news show. Read different newspapers too. Somewhere in the middle is the truth. Everyone has a spin, it just takes a little common sense and education to figure out the truth.

I don't know about this person, but i don't like the news for the same reason. what i do is read the newswires online and articles from different sources around the world. hopefully the facts are in there someplace. if this person doesn't do something similar i would just ignore them as a irrelevant.

No, you are totally right. You have to watch the news, but if you do, you have to either take the news from one sole station and spin or unspin it to your liking. Or watch left media and Fox (it's the only right wing media). This guy is just a total retard who is in too deep over his head.

That seems like a real conversation/discussion stopper.
Although did you ask him where he gets his information about the world? Might be an interesting answer.

Some people are just stupid. They go around complaining about crap they know nothing about. That guy probably didn't even bother to vote in the last election!
