That's a good question. I wish I had the answer. There are so many extremely dishonest people. Some of them actually believe their own lies. There are varying degrees if dishonesty. There are little white lies, there are lies that you tell so you don't hurt someone's feelings, there are lies to cover lies, there are lies to get what you want, there are lies to keep from getting caught, some lies are harmless, and some lies can cause more harm than expected...I think with some people it's an illness.
In some ways it's human nature. I try to be an honest person, but I have told lies to get out of doing things I didn't want to do. For me, I'd rather not have to explain why I don't want to do something. And there are a few reasons for that, not to hurt feelings, or because it's really not their business.

Because honesty does not really exist. Think of honesty like the yin-yang

People are afraid, and they want to be liked. We do everything influenced by those two things. I don't think we try to be dishonest, we just try to get our own way, make people like us, and are influenced by our fear of everything.

Because in order to be accepted by society...people have to live up to societies expectations. And in order to do that, we sometimes have to be dishonest

Because by lieing you can cover up who you really are. You can make your self look better, but we all know in reality it can catch up to you and make you look worse.
