Your website is going to have at least one of the following two purposes.
1. You simply want a website to provide your customers with some information. It will not be an integral part of your business.
- OR -
2. Your website will be integral and a significant portion of your business will at some point come in contact with your website.
If your answer is 2 you should certainly spend the money on getting a professional company to design and build your website. Do not make the mistake many companies may and present your company as a "fly-by-night" operation with a "guy next store" designed website.
I'm not looking for business with the following, it is to just give you information.
Our web design company has re-designed sites as little as a month after other companies designed a site and increased sales in one case by 20%.
In another case we redesigned a somewhat outdated website and increased their website business by 4% which for that company equates to about $2 million a year.
The documentation is all over the web of similar cases. Do not fall for the "do it yourself" option that many people go for.
Professional website design depending on your location is going to run you between $2000 and $6000+. The price depends on if you are looking at custom application programming and/or flash. Our normal cost of a custom logo, homepage, secondary header/footer, contact formatting and contact form-to-email scripts runs about $3000. (Sticker shock I'm sure) But assuming the company you hire offers the same level of quality or better it is going to make you MUCH MUCH more money than doing it yourself.
------------------
With that said if you are only looking for option one you can certainly create something yourself using one of the sites mentioned above. There are plenty of WYSIWYG web site development toos that will assist you. Software like Homesite, Dreamweaver or Front Page runs between $50 and $400 and it will essentially make creating a website similar to doing desktop publishing or creating a flyer.
You can also visit a site like http://www.TemplateMonster.com and buy a nice template to customize yourself.
I hope this has been helpful. Feel free to email me with follow-up questions, I will post the answer to this Q&A.
Good luck!

There are really three ways to create a website for your business.
First, is a template driven website, that allows you to select from a few templates, and design the site yourself.
The second is to purchase programming software, such as DreamWeaver, and design the site yourself.
Third, hire a web design firm to help you customize your ideas.
Even with a web design firm, there are varying levels of expertise. Some are more of a sales firm, and will provide you with a basic site - usually using in house templates - where you provide the text.
Some companies provide you with a semi-custom look and feel, and will work to make sure your site is branded to look like your business.
Or you can also find a company that will completely customize your design, and will also help you design a web marketing strategy.
You should understand what you want your website to do - what type of results do you expect? Some designers know very little about optimization, or marketing your website online. Others concentrate on the marketing aspect of your site first; then help you get the look and feel the way you want.
Design is important, but your ultimate goal should be to make money from your site.
