Great Question - nothing really rules our lives unless we let it. And I personally am not a believer in fate as much as in everything happens for a reason - Trust me!

We must see that we are at God's will if we let him, sometimes Satan interferes.
What one might see as fate, others may see as temptation. We are held responsible, we have the ability to think and consider consequences for our actions, that is what makes us human and not just mamals.

There is a court of judgement for each of us, commanded and rulled over by God and his court of angels. Jesus, his heavenly son, is at his right hand side and the angel Gabriel at his left.
Fate is all an illusion. It is this heavenly court which guides our lives, decides our deaths and brings us to the gates of heaven or the caverns of hell. We make our own choices, but we will pay dearly if our choices do not embrace God, Jesus and the kingdom of heaven.

Neither, life is a random conglomeration of occurences. Any of which could different at anytime. Ultimately, we are all responsible, but since there is no fundamental moral code - it's pretty irrelevant.
