Red soils are porous and friable and non-retentive of moisture. As they are not retentive of moisture these soils are mostly cultivated during the rainy season. The soil is red in color due to the presence of very high content of iron oxides. They have developed from ancient crystalline and metamorphic rocks under conditions of high temperature and moderate to poor rainfall with much leaching. Though these soils are not very fertile, crops can be grown with a lot of irrigation and manuring. The soil is rich in iron content but poor in nitrogen, humus, phosphoric acid and lime.
