I teach business math, and when I get to the section on algebra, this question comes up. How does "business algebra" differ from "math algebra?"

Essentially the difference is in flexibility when it comes to using variables. In math, you generally see variables like X, Y, G, A, etc.

In business, X means nothing! So we "tweak" our variables to make them or descriptive. Instead of using the variable R to mean revenue, we could simply call it Revenue. This way, it's crystal clear where we'd plug in our revenue figure.

Suppose 2004 revenue was $90 and 2005 revenue was $100.

In school, you might use something like R1 for the 2004 figure and R2 for the 2005. But in the business world, R1 and R2 aren't very descriptive and somebody looking at might accidently plug the wrong figure into the wrong variable.

So we could use something that's more descriptive and helps reduce errors like 04Revenue and 05Revenue. The 04Revenue would hold the figure for 2004 and the 05Revenue variable would store the 2005 value.

Other than that, they're basically the same because the math rules are exactly the same.

Same goes for fractions. You learn about fractions in school, but in the business world, we often refer to them as ratios. Same thing, but ratios give us a little more flexibility and make things more descriptive, which again, helps reduce errors.

Its all the same.
You have 25 trucks. Each truck can hold 25 boxes. You have 1875 boxes. How many more trucks do you need to move all the boxes.
Equation for question (25+x)*25=1875
An alebra problem you may have to solve at work.
