It is the name for the type of opening in the front of pants before a zipper was even invented, hence "button-fly" jeans. I don't know why, but the term is older than zippers.

because apparently in the old days, it used to "fly" when you opened or closed it (it zipped either way, faster). I find with a lot of my newer jeans, I think I need an oil can to lubricate the zipper to make it work. Do you personally know the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz? I hope I can borrow his oil can.

maybe because a fly is associated to zipping around all the time? also, sometimes zippers tend to "fly" open *giggle*
