I would be grateful for any input, as the responsibility of the cost of replacing a cooker so damaged is at stake. Is it the homeowner, whose appliance this is, who's liable, or the tenant who lined the oven shelves with foil? Thanks.

Yes, it is a metal and can melt at high temperatures. If there is any spillage on the foil that can also ignite. Common sense.

I would call a reputable appliance dealer in your area and ask for a professional opinion. I would think they could answer that question over the phone. I would not mention that it is a squable with your landlord. I personally purchased a home 36 years ago (it was brand new) and one of the selling features was the built in oven that had small wire racks around the sides and you could line the whole oven and the bottom (where the heating element rested) with aluminum foil for ease in cleaning. I have used this oven for 36 years with it completely lined in aluminum foil and have never had a problem. It's amazing! Unless the foil on the shelves did not have any holes in it and caused a heat build up that might have caused the element to burn out. Lot of possible factors here - such as how old was the element. I'd start asking professionals!

Aluminum foil will ignite and burn and make one holy mess in the oven. And fill your kitchen with an evil smelling smoke.

If you do; have the Fire Dept number handy

no it wont. just dont do the entire rack. and just lay the foi on the rack with an inch or so of space around the edges. besides it really helps prevent the bottoms of your cookies from burning, and other things as well.
