As most people probably said, it depends on the job for which you are applying. If it is a professional post, a good, clean, but not over done appearance is highly advantageous. Think about what you'd look for as an employer.
If an applicant walked in wearing ripped dirty jeans, dilapidated sneakers, a sweat soaked t-shirt, and he smells of motor oil from across the room and you run a bank. Would you be inclined to hire him as a teller based off your first impression? Probably not. Tellers deal too much with your customers, and you probably wouldn't be very trusting of the applicant.
Likewise, if an applicant walked in wearing a mini-skirt dress suit with an inappropriately low cut neckline, 4 inch nails, and a smattering of make-up that'd make a circus clown proud, and her heady perfume wafts over to you with the opening of the door...again you probably wouldn't be inclined to hire her.
My best advice, go for a clean, but natural look for an interview. Also, a Harvard study showed that people have a 89% better chance of being hired while wearing the color blue.
Best of Luck!

yes quite a bit depending where you are and what type of job you have. You should be the cleanest as possible but not a germ a phobic. Or else people will think your a neat freak and judge you freaquently. Your appearence doesn't matter much just that your clean and good for the job. people will know your clean and good and the interviewer will know your goood for the job trust the people who tell you it's important.!?!=-P...

It depends on the environment of the company that you interview at, as well as the field you're interviewing to go into.
If you're interviewing in the professional field, you might want to see what the other employees in that company wear, so as to not look over or under dressed for the position.
If its an industrial or production position, I would think that just looking nice would do fine. Good luck on your interview!

That first impression means a lot. Dress appropriately for the position you're applying for. You want to look like the ideal candidate for the job. i.e. If you're applying for a mechanic's job then don't show up in a three piece.

The physical presentation (clothes, body language, hair, etc) matters as much as the information exchanged.
