If you get really lost, or it's been so long that it seems hopeless, you can pay the bank's Customer Service Dept to go through it with you to sort it out. It is annoying to have to pay for this once-free service, but getting it done correctly with assurance, and starting off fresh, is a great relief.

Start with the bank's balance. Add to that all checks\deductions in your check register that have not cleared on the bank statement. Then deduct any deposits not shown on your bank statement. This number should agree with your checkbook balance (be sure you recorded any fees the bank charged in your checkbook). If it does not balance look for cleared items on the bank statement that may be missing from your check register. Good Luck
