Without hesitation, ABREVA over the counter cream. BUT it must be used in a very specific way (I have found): when you feel a tingling or burning in an area around the lips (but before you can see it), start putting it on then and every several hours thereafter until the tinging/burning goes away - this way you prevent it ever breaking out. I find this much more successful and also conscienciable than an oral prescription, especially beause of side effects. The ABREVA instructions also have a list of typical things that can bring on an attack such as too much sun and not just stress. Good luck!

Abreva is pretty good, probably the best you can get without a perscription.
Also, here is a home remedy trick I've learned over the years...right when you feel the tingle before the cold sore appears, apply ice to the area for about 15-20 minutes. This will help the cold sore not be as bad as it would have been and also heal quicker.

abreva, apply whenyou first start noticing that tingle or itchy feeling about 4 times a day. this stuff works very well.

they say that new stuff abreva is good, I haven't had a coldsore since it came out. I usually use carmex when I am out and camphophenic ehen I am home.
