Music is so subjective though, and what is the criteria? Bands that have affected change in the way music is done? Bands that were hugely popular? Bands that were simply fun to listen to? Well, I'll try to list a few that should be there, whether or not they DESERVE to be there is another question:

-Alice Cooper - The inventor of 'spooky rock'
-Devo- First popular band to use Video, in fact pretty much invented the 'music video'
-Duran Duran- Popularised the music video
-New Order- Changed the way electronic music was made
-U2- alternative rock, the term was invented to categorise them.
-Backstreet Boys- While hated, re-invented 'pop' and dominated the music chats for 10 years (although that pains me greatly)
-Maddonna- Showed what marketing a marginal talent could accomplish. Also proved that sex ALWAYS sells.
-Sex Pistols- Their marketing manager (Malcolm Maclaren) fooled the entire world by taking a group of misfits with NO talent and a 'punk' lifestyle, pushed them as a dangerous and new fashion style, and made a killing. There are still punks on street corners to this day! But the music is and always was-trash (by the bands own admission!)
-The Beatles- The worlds first 'Supergroup'.
-Elvis Presley- The king of Rock and Roll for a reason.
-Frank Sinatra- Was on the charts for SIX decades!!!
-Chemical Brothers- The first 'big' Dj as musician group, even though the days of 'Acid House' began that trend.
-Milli Vanilli- The marketing that went behind these two, and the embarrasment that followed when it was revealed that they didn't sing their material! Giving back the grammy!

OK, maybe that last one doesn't deserve to be here, but the point I'm making is what -really- makes a band great? I personally don't like most of the music I listed here, but the reasons are solid... I'd say there will never be a 'greatest band' because everyone's opinion is different.
If it were up to me, I'd list my own band, not because we're the best, but because I love to play the music we do. (and no, I won't go for a cheap 'plug' here) :)
