Spend the money on a good Mystic Tan. They don't look fake, but they do smell. If you are fair skinned, I suggest you go with the lightest tan they offer and gradually build it as you go. Otherwise, Neutrogena Build-a-Tan lotion works great.

I like Coppertone Endless Summer foam. It doesn't smell, it's not orange, and it's really easy to blend. It also dries in 5 minutes so it doesn't stain. I have also used Neutrogena Summer Glow, it's a daily moisturizer with self-tanner AND SPF 20, this also didn't make me smell and gave me a nice, non-streaky color.
P.S. I tried out the Bare Minerals stuff this weekend...I posted what I thought about it in another question:

Sephora's got a special with 2 foundations, a brush or two, and one of the veils (I think) for $60...I think the "actual value" is twice that but I still don't think it's worth it!

Johnson's summer skin body moisturiser. Use it as a moisturiser, and it builds a wonderful, natural looking tan. It is not streaky smells fab and washes off over time

I'm very pale also and I just wanted a little color for summer. I got a lotion called Hemp Golden Glow. I found it at Walmart and it works really well. It doesn't look unnatural and it isn't streaky. I love it.

I have liked the Neutrogena lotion line. The mouse did not work as well for me. The worst I have tried was the Ban de Sole line. When I went to return it the cashier even remarked on how orange I looked.

I like the new Dove lotion ones. Be careful though-I got a sample of the one for medium skin-thought it was regular lotion and didn't know it-it worked! It smells nice and feels nice and the price isn't bad.

Don't use any. Be happy with the skin you're in. Pale is the new tan.
