I inherited some old ash tray stands from the 50s that were all brass, and they were faded and kind of blotchy also. (little black stops, not sure it was rust though). I went to AC Moore, (they have all kind of paint and you don't have to buy a hugh container) either and bought brass color paint and painted the whole bottom on all of them, you would never know they were so bad before, it has been over three years now, and they still look great.

Make sure it is clean. You can get spray paint at Lowes or Home Depot. It will be around $4.00 a can but you should be able to do a coffee table with one can.
ps. Brass does NOT rust. It is probably just plating and not all brass?

You can find "brass" spray paint made by Krylon. As your table is brass, you may want to ask your paint store about cleaning and priming the metal. They may tell you the spray paint is sufficient.
