"I took either a bus or taxi from the bus station to the city center, except at Matamoros, where I walked about two miles to the bridge to Brownsville, Texas."

American bus lines will deliver you to their terminal in Brownsville and you'll have to walk or take a cab to the Mexican line that services the route you're going to take. It's been a long time since I took a bus to Mexico and forgotten the details. However, Greyhound sold me tickets to the border and I bought tickets for the rest of the trip at the Mexican terminal. The bus seats are narrow and give little leg room. The trip from Brownsville is overnight and will be tiring to say the least, depending on far into Mexico you're traveling. I'd check for air fares before settling on the bus. You can be there in a matter of hours on a scheduled straight-through flight. Not so with a bus.

Have fun on your trip.

There are three if not more that go into Mexico but I don't think they cross at Brownsville. You would have to get a bus to Laredo then into Mexico. Here are some bus lines. Americano bus lines/ El conejo/ El tornado and now Omnibus de Mexico is leaving larger cities. Good luck
