I am a single mother, I stayed home to care for my 4 kids and my aging parents and have not been employed for 10 years. I have been in school, first part time and then full time as my kids became more independent. I am two months away from graduation with an A.A.S. Degree in Computer Network Systems and need a resume to re-enter the workforce.

There are a couple of ways you could do it I suppose.

1) Just leave it off and answer honestly if asked.
2) List it with dates as you would a job you worked at, listing it as "Domestic Engineer" if you like and include things like handling stress, multitasking, negotiating skills, etc. as accomplishments or strengths, etc.
3) List the dates as you would a job you worked at but just indicate "Hiatus to raise family and continue schooling" or something like that.

Good Luck

You prepare a Functional Resume. This type of resume focuses on the skills and abilities you have. You have learned many skills from your experiences even though they were not employment experiences. I have some gaps in my employment history and an HR specialist recently gave me this advice.

I wouldn't put it on the resume, but instead during an interivew if asked I would tell them I was not in the workplace for those ten years while I was raising a family and starting my education. Be honest.

Be honest. State that you were taking care of family, but in doing so, you acquired the following skills (if applicable):
* Ability to multi-task
* Ability to problem solve (didn't you have to figure out how and where for insurance etc)
* Ability to do complex scheduling
* Hands on experience in managing a budget and working within it.

Just tell them you were raising your kids!! In my opinion, MOM is the toughest job ever. Cook, chauffer, accountant, doctor, conflict mediator, need I go on?

Self employed getting a Phd in LIFE

Best of luck!

Revise your resume so that specific dates are eliminated. Focus on responsibilities and job titles rather than companies and tenure

Good luck.
