Because men actually want a woman to run their lives, that way if something goes wrong they have someone to blame it on. It's much easier than taking charge of their own lives, doing what needs to be done, taking credit for what goes right and responsibility for what goes wrong.

Girls presume to know better what guys want because they tend to think in cause and effect (long term planning) more than guys do.
For example a guy will say "I want to date you exclusively" and mean it, then they will see another woman walking down the road and will very obviously stare at her. He seems incapable of realizing that he will not reach his stated goal of "dating exclusively" if he behaves in this manner. He will say "I want to pass this test" and then will spend all his time hanging out after school and does not study - once again seemingly missing the link between cause and effect.
So when a girl you care about is listening to what you are saying and paying attention to what you are doing, she can not help but want to point out the contradictions, to help you reach your stated goal (as she believes that is really what you want to do).

It's just that girls are a little more intuitive than guys from childhood on up. We can pick up on body language and things like that a little quicker, and past experience helps us zone in on what's needed/wanted. (Plus, there's this magazine called Cosmopolitan...LOL)
