I'm specifically looking for something that I can make into an equation in excel. Anyone know how to do this?

I think you could do this with an equation. If you had A as the wins column, and B as the loss column, or however you arrange it, it would probably work.

Say the first place team is in row 1, the second in row 2. Column C in row 2 could have an equation like ((A1-B1)+(B2-A2))/2. You could then apply that equation down the games behind column.

I checked real quick, and it does seem to work.

(Difference in number of wins + difference in number of losses)/2

So, for instance, Team A is 9-2, Team B is 7-5. Difference in number of wins is 2, difference in number of losses is 3. 2+3/2 = 2.5. Team B is 2 1/2 games behind Team A.
