In order to buy stock in the secondary market (NYSE, NASDAQ, etc) you either have to own a seat on the exchange or go through a broker.

So yes anyone can buy stock, but first you have to have enough money to buy a seat.

If tryingto buy directly from the company, it depends on the company itself. Some companies will sell directly to investors, but not many. Most pay a brokerage firm to handle it all for them

You can use an online broker like etrade or ameritrade. You do have to pay a small commission for every transaction.

There are a few companies that sell their stock directly. Empahsis on "few."
