First they go 6 miles in opposite direction so they are 12 miles apart, then each turns 3 miles left (which again is in the opposite direction, because left of one is the right of other), so a total of another 6 miles apart.

There 12 miles vertically and 6 miles horizontally - ie we have a right angled triangle of perpendicular = 12 mi and base=6 mi. The shortest distance between the two is the hyp - solving by Pythagoras theorem

hyp^2 = base^2 + perp^2 = 144+36 = 180
so hyp (or distance between the two) = sqrt(180) = 6 * sqrt(5)

If each car go 6 miles in the opposite direction from the starting point and each turn left 3 miles then their distance would be sq rt(12^2+6^2)=13.42 miles.

The double of the square root of 45 , so between 12 and 14 miles

6^2 = 36
3^2 = 9
36+9 = 45
6 and 3 are the sides of a right triangle. So the other side (longer = hypotenuse) per the theorem of Pythagoras is the square root of the sum of the other two squared.
Since there are 2 triangles, one for each car, you add two such hypotenuses.

They are x miles apart.
Pythagorean theorem
3^2+3^2=x^2/2
9+9=(x^2)/2
(x^2)/2=18
x^2=72
x=+-6√2(there is no need for this negative number)
so x=6√2
They are 6√2 miles apart.

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

6^2 + 3^2 = c^2
36 + 9 = c^2
45 = c^2

c = sqrt(45)
c = sqrt(9 * 5)
c = 3sqrt(5)

ANS : 6sqrt(5)

because they are both 3sqrt(5) from the origin and 6sqrt(5) from each other.
