IQ has nothing to do with writing properly. There do seem to be a whole lot of non-native English speakers on here, so that may be part of it. There are also a lot of younger people and, for some reason, they just don't seem to care about spelling or proper grammar. Maybe it is from all the instant messaging and shortcuts in internet writing now?

A lot of teenagers are using IM abbreviations to ask their questions. It looks like bad spelling, but it's really a kind of clumsy shorthand.

Some people have not learned to spell. A certain percentage of the population has learning disabilities that hamper spelling skill acquisition. Sometimes the spelling is so bad that even spell-check is no help. I think there is a large proportion of this type on answers because - how do you find info in an Internet search if you can't spell it right for the search engine? The yahoo-search spelling corrector is a great thing, but again, only can help if the spelling is close.

One theory of teaching holds that love of reading is the more important task of reading instruction and 'whole language' instruction will fill in spelling skills automatically as reading skills improve - to bad results. Spelling is rarely learned where it is not taught.

Take your pick.

Both, and probably a great deal of stupidity, and media influence. They don't have the proper wear with all to teach, never mind be there to direct our attentions to what we should be inclined to want.
I still search for people on this world who speak, and write ENGLISH! All I find are those who speak and write bad American, and I never knew American was a language, especially in North , South, and Central America all speaking writing different languages. How could any one of them be called upon to teach the speaking or writing of such a complex language as English.

I think some of it is laziness. Some of it can be people who don't know English very well. Also, if they are typing it in a different language and using a translation program, the results can be off due to different grammar usage between languages. Also, kids trying to sound "cool" is probably a big part of it.

There is a difference between using proper grammar and proper English.

People who lack in writing with proper grammar speak English as a foreign language and their grammar mistakes should be acceptable.

However, using slang, abbrv. , misspelling words etc. is more a cultural and educational thing among English speaking countries such as US, UK and Australia.

Some of them really cannot spell but those are exceptions...

I would say a combination of both. If they use incorrect gramme and bad sentence structure it may be their age, education, or they could be foreign. If it is their inability to use spell check, then someone is in need of an IQ test.
