I have a friend I really care about and he is always sick or unhappy about something. Usually it's something very serious going on in his life. So these things are not just in his head. I just wondered if anyone knew about something I can do just to make him happy even for a day...

Get him away from the stress. Tell him you understand all that's going on in his life...but you two are going to take a BREAK FOR THE DAY! Get him to agree with the whole thing first. It won't work unless he's on board, with the plan. All the junk in his life will be there when you get back. Now make a plan together. I'm sure it will work,I have done the same thing with a guy friend of mine.Try it!

You can't! A depressed person needs professional help. Possibly medications. If he always has something serious going on in his life, then he needs to work on resolving those problems. Many depressed people create the serious problems that "make" them depressed. If he won't get help, then he will just keep dragging his friends and family down with him.

I have a 25 yr old friend who has been fighting cancer for 8 years. It has now spread everywhere and she is in excrutiating pain. She knows she only has 2-3 weeks left. She still laughs a lot, gets excited about the small things and cheers up all those around her. I think she will exit our world smiling and laughing all the way.

I dated a girl who was suffering from depression. We were together for 2 years before I just couldn't take anymore. The problems with depression are numerous, but the first one is that a lot of people won't admit that they are experiencing it. In that respect it is almost like alcohol and drug addiction because if you won't acknowledge it, you can't reverse it. Next problem is that after long periods of time, it can "rub off" on the people closest to them because they get frustrated and depressed watching them in that state. The only thing that I was able to truly figure out about people suffering from depression was this...

No one thing that you do will make a depressed person truly happy. It may for the moment, but it is usually something so deeply rooted in that person that it won't be addressed until that person has the desire and the courage to confront it and do something about it themselves. That day never comes for some, but if it does and you are around when it does, do everything that you can to help them...they will love you for it.

Keep this in mind...You can't make a person happy if they are already unhappy with themselves.

Happiness comes from the inside and spreads outward.

Depression is a vicious enemy, and you have to fight back. You may feel like you're not strong enough to fight, but you really do have that strength. You really are stronger than you think.
When you're depressed, you constantly have self-defeating thoughts. The only thing you can focus on is your sadness. When you're depressed, it can be difficult to get out of that depression. Say to yourself, "Do I really want to be depressed? Do I like feeling this way?" Of course you don't want to be depressed. No matter how bad you feel, hold on. Don't let yourself get to the point where you feel like there's no hope. I guarantee that there is always hope. Don't let yourself stay in your depression. Fight back!
A good way to fight depression is to keep busy. When you're depressed, you usually don't feel like doing anything. You just want to lie in bed or sit in a chair. If you do that, your mind will become idle, and self-defeating thoughts may come into your head. The longer you're idle, the deeper you'll be drawn into your depression. Don't allow your mind to become idle.

Usually you ask a person about their interest or last interest. The KEY: Find or do something with final reachable goals. Like simply stuff, walk up a hill or build a toy model. But than note the success! People get depress because their not goal setting or JUST BIG dreamers!

Sounds that he needs to talk to his doctor about the depression and perhaps get medicine to help to start with. You didn't say how old this person is and if they can get away from what is depressing him so much. He has to recognize he has a problem to begin with to want to get help for it. Have you talked to him about his depression and what is causing it ? You could get rent a movie or go to a movie that is comedy, but just one day is not the answer to the rest of his live. Try to get him help.

Support him. Be there for him. Make him smile. Tell a joke.

When I'm in my depressed states, the best thing someone did for me was offer me a hug. Just feeling that someone else cares is better than any medicine in the world.
