I have great credit, but I managed a call center where my staff had to make collection calls. People who owe money scream, hang up, threaten the caller, pretend to not speak English, pretend to be someone else, pretend to have already paid the bill and similar type tactics. One man threatened to kill me and everyone I knew. None of these tactics work and actually make it more difficult to work out arrangements.
I was known for being willing to work with people as long as they were upfront and honest, but not many people wanted to put the cards on the table and work on a deal. The part that was very enlightening for me is the people who did these things had really good jobs and actually had the income to back the debts. They just did not have their priorities straight and no sense of financial responsibility.

I always answer and tell them the person they are looking for is off at college in another city or state. & that I don't have any contact with them just on certain holidays. I haven't heard anyone call for me in a while. *SMILE* It works. I'm saving up to pay them, I don't like being hassled when I'm working on paying them. Try that, tell them the person they are looking for doesn't live there anymore and is out of town or something along those lines. :)

I made sure they couldn't find me. I moved, changed my name and got a new phone number. Man, I hope they aren't checking Yahoo! Answers. Can bill collectors trace you down through your Yahoo! account. Crap!! :)

Let the answering machine pick it up or say I'm babysitting and ask for a message.
