I don't remember the Iraqi people ever appealing to the United States to free them.
If the Iraqi people "step up" to earn their freedom, I think they'd be stepping up to America.

Look how long it took America to step up to the plate and demand our independence from Great Britain. Learning to live in a democratic society must be a daunting task for people who have been ruled by an iron-fisted dictator like Saddam Hussein. With the insurgents running amok I imagine it will be even harder for them to take the reigns. We could be looking at many more years of American involvement before the situation is resolved.
