All my life we've fed apples to horses. Someone just told me not to do this that it is very bad for them. Is this true? Why is it bad for them?

I think apples are a great snack for horses. maybe the granny smith might upset their tummy if they had to many. but i think it is ok. not like you are giving them dough nuts.

Apple seeds contain a cyanide compound that metabolises into cyanide. It is generally harmful to smaller animals such as dogs and humans if they eat enough but I've never heard of horses being affected by the cyanide. An abrupt change in diet or a large amount of apples can cause digestive problems but, generally speaking, apples are perfectly safe for horses.

Anyone who says the horse will only eat the grass and not the trees obviously hasn't looked at anyone's wooden fence! Horses love wood, and nice, fresh, tasty apple wood is sure to be even better than a boring old fence! Seriously, if you want to keep horses in a pasture with trees, you need to fence off the trees. You can do this with plain old portable electric fencing, with a solar battery operated charger. Otherwise you will have some trees damaged, and some even possibly killed. This depends on how many horses you have in the area, how much grass they have to eat, how small an area it is, and the individual horses. I have some horses that never chew wood, and I have others that are related to beavers! Good luck. Your trees will need it!

You can feed your horses apples, just don't feed them tons! And don't ever feed them apples that are not ripe (very green). I have owned and showed horses for 20 years and feed my horses apples. I only gave them a few apples a week though as a treat.

I've always fed apples to my horse, and never had a single problem with it. If you're concerned about the problem, you could always give your horses apple flavored treats instead!
