Well not all of the time. There was this one girl that was there (this season as a matter of fact), she was really big (weight wise), and she was the BEST singer on the show this season and she got sent home. I think they sent her home because of her weight.

It's definitely a popularity contest. Taylor Hicks was definitely not the best singer but he had a personality that America loved and that's why he won The best singers never win; the people with the best personality or background story usually do. For example Fantasia, a single mother, high school dropout, couldn't even read, but America liked her because of her hard beginnings and they felt bad for her. The best singers never win, it's just what America likes. I think America's just tone-deaf. :)

i dont' think it's all about singing, though.
remember that the winners are being chosen by the american public. so, imagine WHO is sitting at home dialing their phones to vote and what criteria THOSE people are basing their choices on.
i'm sure if a record exec was choosing, they would pick different people than the public b/c of their actual experience in the field. the public doesn't see it like that.
with the voters, you get grandmas who like Ace's tight leather pants or guys who like seeing kelly pickler in red corsets.
or you get middle-aged women who enjoy hearing taylor's soul added performances.
plus, it's more than just singing. it's the whole package. there are some unattractive people out there who can sing. do they get record deals??? unfortunately, not.
or someone who just can't perform well, they aren't entertaining enough. they may have pipes, but do they put on a good show??
take madonna for instance...she is a FANTASTIC performer which makes up for her lack of vocal range. i mean, all bow to the material girl, but she can't pull off a mariah carey song and she knows it.
so, it's not always about singing.

I don't think the best singers get Thur to the finals.I felt very let down by the final winner. I didn't think he was the best singer, he was the most popular among some, but not among most. I thought and still think he was too old.I think "Parris " should have won....

By allowing viewers to vote the producers of the show have turned it into a popularity contest instead of a talent contest. You can never underestimate the stupidity of the viewers.

It seems like the ones at the final 10 have some talent. It's not easy to fake singing chops unless you are Milli Vanilli.

This year at least the very best singer didn't win, that's for sure.

I think that Chris Daughtry was the best on this last season. I also think that it is more of a popularity contest.

A lot of people with more talent than the finalists get cut because they don't know how to prepare or they are not doing the right style of music.
