Please do not have a hysterectomy unless you have a severe medical condition that requires a hysterectomy. You can have your tubes cut, burned & tied to prevent having another child. A hysterectomy will change you beyond your control. Being moody for no reason at all, to tired to get up plus you have to take estrogen replacement therapy to control all the hotflashes & night sweats & believe me if you are the one in few who can not take the estrogen replacement therapy...you will be miserable.

First, you don't say why your doc has suggested a hyst. Is it because you have 4 kids and he thinks that a hyst is a good birth control measure??? If it is, you should a.) run as fast as you can to another doctor and b.) report him to the medical board.

If the hyst is for a malignant concern, such as endometrial cancer, etc., then it is appropriate. But you still need to discuss with your doctor how the surgery will be performed (vaginal, abdominal, laparoscopic assisted vaginal) and what will be done (removal of uterus only, removal of one or both ovaries, removal of pelvic lymph nodes, removal of one of both tubes, removal of cervix), whether or not HRT would be right for you, and if not synthetic HRT, then what suggestions does he or she have to mitigate the effects of surgical menopause and the long term consequences of having a hyst?

If your doc is suggesting a hyst because of a benign condition like fibroids or Endometriosis, know that a.) there are other alternatives and b.) a hysterectomy is not a cure for Endometriosis on any level. Any doctor who does not know this and does not keep current on Aromatase expression in endometrial implants should not be operating on you to begin with.

As for other benign conditions like abnormal uterine bleeding/dysfunctional uterine bleeding, menorraghia, adenomyosis, etc., there are alternatives for those treatments as well, such as endometrial ablation (which will not cure adenomyosis, but may alleviate the symptoms) and other alternatives to hysterectomy.

It sounds like you are not ready for a hysterectomy regardless of the reason. If it is not for a malignancy and is not being done to save your life, know that you have options. One doctor does not dictate how you should live your life.

Good luck.

I would recommend you to have it done if you have something like cancer. They usually perform it to keep benign conditions under control. If you have a benign condition that is not bothering you (heavy bleeding, pain), then you can make the final decision. It is YOUR body. Most doctors just love to perform this type of surgery to earn more money. not that they really care about you. The more they remove, the more they will earn. My gynecologist was so sad when he told me 10 years ago that I needed a hysterectomy. He is still waiting for me. I have regular check ups and that's all. I am the one who decides if I want this type of surgery or not and after 10 years with the problem, you should get a clear idea. I may have it in 15 or more years, but not yet.

You seem very young to have a hysterectomy, but I don't know the doctor's reasons for wanting one done. Has he explained why? (tumors, etc... that would be determintal to your health) I think after it is taken out, a person has to be on hormones to regulate the female health. That's a long time to be taking estrogen/progestrone.
If you disagree with your doctor and he won't budge, get a second opinion.

Why would he recommend that unless there is a medical issue? If you want something easy/accurate for birth control, try an IUD. They last 5-10 years depending on kind, you dont have to think about anything, and they are effective. Plus, you can get pregnant again after it is removed, if that is desired.

If you feel your doctor is not being honest with you, then get another opinion from another doctor. Unfortunately hysterectomy is on the rise, with some doctors doing the procedure unnecessarily so see another doctor to confirm or deny your doctor's reasons for having it done.

how much of a health risk r u if you took a chance of having more? 4 I would think would b enough, but you never know what might happen down the road, and you might want another, Yet if it is a big health risk, I would certainly consider it.

ask your self this simple question? Is this a medical necessity?
If so, maybe you should have it done. If not and it is only being done as birth control. NO, find a new method of birth control...Good luck..
