As a proud Italian, I'm sick of hearing excuses for Zidane's headbutt and I'm sick of hearing excuses for France's loss. Italy Won the World Cup. There will be plenty of chances for everyone else to win except they're going to have to wait another 4 years for that possibility. In the mean time... Grow up. The Italians aren't going to let anything get in the way of their celebration. We're just fed up of hearing people try to downplay our victory and that's why we continuously participate in these discussion threads. People have to stop trying to shift focuz from the world cup winners to the event that was a self-inflicted low point that ended the career of a great player. Provocation is ridiculous when you consider the amount of money these players make to play soccer and conduct themselves as players... dealing with BS is part of the job description

just for the record... there's been speculation that there was an insult to his mom, his sister, his wife and just about everyone else in his family, not to mention him being a dirty terrorist. these have all been allegations that "lip readers" have read from the same lips. you can't just arbitrarily pick the one that best justifies the headbutt in your opinion. materazzi denied all of the above mentioned allegations and went as far as to say that he lost his mom at 15 and mothers are sacred in his opionion and thus he would never offend someone's mother. everything about the insult is speculation people.

Also... in my question, notice it says who AGREES... if you don't.. this question wasn't directed to you so why bother wasting ur breath?? if you can't understand THAT instruction its obvious why you wouldnt be able to understand something as complex as a soccer game.

Hell no.
I don't agree with you.
The Italian player insulted Zidane's mom and sister. And i bet he knew that Zidane will give him a headbutt for that insult.
AND they won against Australia because of that unjustified penalty.
That they won against Ukraine is not a wonder.
'La Repubblica' tried to ban Thorsten Frings with some moving Images. Although the Argentinian who they say who was hit says that he didn't feel anything, Frings got banned. (I really think that 'La Repubblica' knew that the one who had to make the decision was german. Perhaps they gave him the Images with the words: 'If you don't ban him, an Italian will prove the proofs. Frings'll get banned anyway and you lose your job.')

This are no excuses.
They're true.
Really.
Most of them.

I don't think Italy deserved to be the Worldchampion.

Im italian, and an italian football fan and i think that the Zidane incident is overshadowing the fact Italy won but i still wouldnt change it. It made the game more intense, Zidane and Materazzi, who both scored the goals and seemed fine the whole game sudenlly got into an argument that left Materazzi on the ground after a head-but, its weird and brings up alot of questions too. If the head-but incident never happend, people would still try to say Italy didn't deserve it and come up with some sort of reason for it, but really it doesnt matter because ITALY WON!! woooh...

I understand your frustration, but Italy won because Zidane was not present. It was supposed to be a soccer game, not a mind game. There was no need to insult anyone's mom or sister. I completely understand how Zidane could have been angry, and he had every right to feel that way. Anybody in Zidane's shoes would have acted the same way.

Okie, I absolutely agree that Italian's undeserving victory is being
overshadowed by Zidane's great legacy. It seems to be that majority of people around the world is talking about Zidane, and not Italian's victory. Not only that, they are calling Italian players some foul names, such as cheaters, liars and etc. ..

Forza azzuri! As a 25% Italian, American born, person who's new to it all but cheered for Italy from the start I'm happy. This sport is amazing and needs to be racognised for how it unites countries, just look at those pictures of the Rome after win party.
All this hype over Zidane is hurting the image of not only Italy but football as well. Its called the "beautiful game" so lets stop making it ugly, there's enough things that already do.

Let's talk about Buffon's excelent goal keeping, aside from Italy scoring against it's self, Zidanes penalty kick and the PKs at the end there, never did a shot get in. Ha giocato da Dio.

For those that say Italy won it under street tactics or what have you I have this to say in the only language it needs to be said in-
Ce la siamo meritata!

Yes I totally agree. I'm half Italian and I don't think that everyone should focus on ten seconds of the game. Plus I actually heard on the news that Zidane's mother and sister was in the insult NOTHING about being a terroist or something stupid like that. The game was actually pretty good, despite the fact that Italy looked tired in the end. Italy won and France lost, let's get over this.

I personally don't like penalty shoot outs to decide the World Cup, but I think of it as pay back from 12 years ago when Italy lost in penalty kicks to Brazil. I want people to stop talking about that old fart Zidane, okay. He was SOO stupid to lash out like that. In competitive sports there will ALSO be trash talk and he should get over it.

My feelings about Totti and Zidane are they were both wrong. When you have idolized these people to the point where you expect them to be perfect, I believe you are dellusional. These are human beings, prone to mistakes. Will the perfect one among you please stand up? I dont see the point in insulting Zidane or Totti for mistakes they made in light of our own humanity. I think they both know that what they did was wrong and stupid. Its not all about what you do, but how you deal with the consequences. Anybody can do something wrong, but its takes a man to admit that he is wrong. I believe Zidane has done that by saying what he did was " reprehensible." He was wrong, he commited a "bone-head" act, he admitted it. What else do you want from him? Its folly to crucify him on a cross of self-righteousness. Although both Totti and Zidane were wrong, there IS a difference between a pound of leather and a pound of feathers. -------------------- I believe the protest comes with the fact that both the Italian and French coachs have stated that the official used video evidence to give Zidane a red card. This is against the FIFA rules, therefore it was an illegal red card. This has nothing to do with how right or wrong Zidane was, but everything to do with rule infractions.

I'm sick of seeing the replay every time I watch the news and I'm tired of seeing headlines about it. I had never heard of the dude until that happened and I wish I could have kept it that way.

The French just need a good whine to go with all the cheese.
