A new item today stated that WalMart will no longer prosecute shoplifting that involves $25 or less.

Do you think this encourages people to shoplift?
Or do you think that this is smart on WalMart's part, to concentrate their efforts and resources on the more serious offenders?

I do agree to this policy, beacuse I think that a large corporation such as walmart, which grosses an annual income of over 200billion worldwide, will have no reason to prosecute minor shoplifters. $25 of lost property at walmart, is like me or you losing a penny. you dont care and you dont want to spend the time and effort looking for it!

Shoplifting is shoplifting no matter what the cost of the item. I think it's ridulous. It just opens the doors for more shoplifters, therefore, our prices go up. There are several things less than $25 in Walmart.

They still make the people give the merchandise back, it's not like you can just walk out of Wal-Mart with whatever you want, so long as it's under $25. They are probably far too busy to prosecute everyone. Or maybe they finally realized their target audience is the lower class who steal because they need to.

There is more to it than that 2nd offenders will be prosecuted and all shoplifters will be banned from ALL Walmarts. So yes I agree.

That's crazy! It will practically cause looting! If people can just walk out of the store with up to $25.00 of stolen merchandise each time they go to any Wal-Mart, what incentive do they have to be honest, and what's to keep them from going over and over again to different stores and doing the same thing each time? They must think they'll save money by not having to pay lawyer fees each time, but all they're doing is encouraging more losses, and making people feel like if they can do it at Wal-Mart, they can do it anywhere!

Many stores have a threshold of $20-25, people just don't know about it. And saying they won't prosecute does not mean they will not be arrested, be on record with the county sheriff's office, etc.

i think it will provoke it because most the stuff I buy is less than $25 so if i'm not going to get in trouble i might as well steal it and save up for the bigger stuff.

Perhaps they now realize that most of their shoplifting is internal.

They may not prosecute but you can still be arrested and have a police record.
