I need a job, i am a 47 yr old Data entry operator with 12000 keystrokes no errors and am having a pickle of a time getting hired. I have exp in receivables and payables also. I live in So Cal, Orange cnty. I think that maybe i am getting too old... i have had several interviews and seems they pick the young ones.

Is this because they can pay them less????

No they don't pick the younger people because they pay them less, they pay them just as much they will pay you. Your age is too old for the market. Very few companies will hire a person at your age, sad and unfair to you but true. Young people can work faster, adapt easier, be a lot more current with technology. Its the facts.

I'm same age & you may be partly right. I'm also having hard time getting work (I'm a Paralegal, Greater Seattle area, with many yrs of experience). Employers would rather hire less experienced, so they can pay less and they think us middle aged folks are going to burn up our sick leave faster. It stinks, but have hope that someone will appreciate us.

Not only is it because they can pay them less, but is also has to do with the fact that they ARE more inexperienced. I know that sounds backwards but here is how it works:

You have 2 applicants for a position in the accounting department.

One is an experienced adult who has worked in this field for many years, has a good employment history, is reliable, etc.

The second applicant is a young woman/man who does not have much experience but is eager to learn, good employment history thus far, reliable, etc.

Most likely the employer will prefer the younger applicant because the employer can teach them their company's way of doing things. If you (the more experienced applicant) have a lot of experience in the field, you may have your own way of doing things. Usually, the employer wants to be able to teach the employee THEIR way of doing things and an older applicant who may have been at the same company for a long time may not want to adjust to a new way of doing certain tasks.

I work in the accounting dept. of my company for the CFO/Controller of the company. He was searching for months for someone to fill this position before I was hired. I had very little previous experience in this department what so ever, but was eager to learn. He told me that a lot of the previous applicants were older, so they had their own way of doing things, and that he wanted his employee to do things his way.

You just have to understand the mind set of the employer instead of only thinking as the employee. It's not only that they can pay younger people less, but that is a factor in the equation.

yes that is exactly why. they are going to hiring anyone that can help them save money
