one nuke launched will trigger all the others, the counter attack will cause massive nuclear strikes. it will destroy all life and all existance and any trace of it will be lost! total OBLITERATION! Could it possibly be further from societys purpose? I thought it was absolute insanity when I first read about it, but M.A.D is as real as cancer, what happened to let this occur and why should we accept it?

Its lunacy. It is also fascistic to decide whether millions die. We have Thatcher and Reagan in the 1980's to thank for that, they built up the cold war to bankrupt the Soviet Union. Thatcher famously said that she would "rather be dead than red". Well, good for her.
Just when we all had started to forget about the nukes and the cold war, it all starts kicking off again.

M.A.D. worked in the Cold War because the Soviets were rational and didn't want to destroy the world anymore than we did. Unfortunately, our current enemies are not rational (religious fanatics) so M.A.D. will no longer work as its originators intended.

This is what helped us win the Cold War with the Soviet Union. They may have been building nuclear weapons, but they couldn't use them because they knew we'd launch ours and, though they could kill us, they would die, too, when our missles reached them.
It was a stalemate and an effective strategy.
After that, it was easy to outspend them in developing our military...in their effort to try to keep up, they spent themselves into an economic collapse. Hence, capitalism was able to arise in the former communist region of the U.S.S.R.

It's the situation of competition gone insane. Nuclear nations have an advantage over non-nuclear nations, and a stick to wield against other nuclear nations. That's how it came about, not that that justifies it. By the way, some forms of life would survive, e.g. scorpions (link).

You are very right. But this is democracy. The politicians do exactly the opposite of what people want. Remember Vietnam and Afghanistan? Now all we need is some Osama to trigger this madness
