when you give someone the benefit of the doubt it means you beleive them even though you are that quite sure of the answer.

Don't look too far into it or you will get confused. It's like if someone cuts you off "give them the benifit of the doubt" they might be having a bad day. That's just an example. I have the same problem of looking too far into things and just getting confused.... It proves that you are a smart person b/c you feel like things should have more meaning they are not just simple.... Hope I helped and hey now you have a new phrase to use.

The benefit, I think means the good side. In other words, the benefit is you doubt what they do not mean rather than what they mean.

Example:
Liking the people who answer in this category is not a reason that makes your question categorized correctly, therefore your question is intentionally miscategorized and a violation. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and not report you. Then you can hope the Yahoo Answers Team gives you the benefit of the doubt when they notice this.

Let me give you an example:
Say a short kid wants to play on the basketball team,
Everyone else laughs at the idea,
but the coach will give this kid the benefit of a doubt.
Meaning, even though he is short,
he might actually be very skilled.
But the coach won't know for sure
unless he at least give this kid a chance.
Basically,
it's about having faith in the underdog.
It's the belief in success when
all the odds are stacked up against you.

I give someone the benefit of the doubt whenever I don't have any real proof that they did something wrong. They probably haven't ever given me a reason to believe that they would be lieing to me in the past, so I want to believe that they are telling the truth now.

For example: it means that when someone tells you something that you doubt even slightly, you are going to go ahead and believe them anyway. You are going to give them your belief or confidence, even though you have no reason to, or a slight reason not to.

If you think about it, your doubt should benefit you, the doubter, because it will protect you from being taken for a sucker. If you trust the person anyway, you are giving this benefit to him!

Giving a person the benefit of the doubt means that you think the best of that person, or the better of the scenerio, despite your suspecions otherwise. Say a coworker calls in work sick, but you suspect that they are playing hooky. Giving them the benefit of the doubt would mean that you doubt that they are really sick, but you are going to give it to them.

Giving someone "the benefit of the doubt" means that you aren't coming to a conclusion regarding what they did. You are still giving them a chance to prove you wrong. I hope that helped

It means, there is some doubt about whether someone is or has done something good or bad, and you are going to go ahead and give them credit on the good side, even though you're not sure.

It really means that they still doubt what you are saying but can not prove it, so they will give you 'the benefit of the doubt'!

means there is a good chance they are guilty of something, but there is no concrete proof. So you have a doubt and you err the doubt in their favor or give them the benefit of the doubt...
