There is a pretty big difference between an electric guitar and an electric bass guitar in that they are two completely different instruments. The neck is thicker in a bass, the tone is deeper, the sound is lower, the strings are thicker, the frets are further apart, and so on. If you are wanting to be a bass player, trade in your electric guitar for an electric bass or if money is no object, keep your electric guitar (just in case) and buy an electric bass guitar. Good luck!

Yes there is a difference...
An electric guitar has the same 6 strings as your acoustic... but a lighter gauge of string w/ half wound (lower) & half nickel (higher note) strings... as an acoustic would have 4 wound & 2 nickel... The action makes an electric guitar seem much easier to play than an acoustic.
An electric bass (normally) has 4 strings & all are wound & very thick, compared to a 6 string guitar. The main 4 strings (as basses do come in 4, 5, 6, 8, & 12 string models) are about an octave or two lower than the the 4 lower noted strings of the guitar (lowE, A, D, G)...
The bass guitar usually holds the "root" note of a song or progression & compliments the song or progression as rythm w/ the drums.
Same scales & tunings... different feels & purpose.

The regular guitar has 6 strings, tuned from low to high, E-A-D-G-B-E. The Bass Guitar has 4 strings (some have 5, but 4 is the standard), and they're much thicker--resulting in a much bassier sound---tuned to E-A-D-G, but a couple octaves lower than the regular guitar. Example of a famous bass guitar riff?--the opening of "Money" by Pink Floyd...just so you understand the difference in sound. Learn regular guitar FIRST...you could easily learn bass later once you know that.

a BIG diffrence. the basic bass guitar has 4 thick strings, a lot longer, less fretboards, a lot low pitched and the ways of playing is a lot diffrent than the guitar specially when youre a little "advanced" (slapping and popping). if you want to play bass buy a 4 string bass guitar thats it. =)

I guess you could play bass on a guitar by just using the bottom (thickest ) 4 strings EADG. You will get a different sound though as a guitar is not a bass. So it might better to just buy a bass guitar.
