my two year old son has a really bad cough. he keeps coughing harshly about every few minutes. we just got a puppy on sunday, and today i discovered she has worms.
my dad mentioned that when a person has worms, they will cough(because the worms are trying to get up or something)--is this true?
i suppose it could also be an allergy to the puppy, but i just want to know if worms can cause coughing too. i gave my son some cough medicine for toddlers and it isn't working. i am definitely going to be investigating his stools today though...

EDIT: we are a military family, and go to a post hospital. same day appts. are rarely available, and you can not talk to your dr. directly(sometimes a nurse though). i am aware of taking my son to the doctor when necessary. i am just asking people's personal opinions for now.

If you son is feeling bad, take him to the doctor! don't try home remedies or asking people around take him to the doctor before it gets worse!

He could be allergic to the puppy. It would be a long process for him to get worms, (he ingests something like a flea or feces from the puppy)...which I would believe is unlikely. If he did ingest a flea, it would take some time before he could get worms and I don't think it would cause caughing or any other issues so soon.
It's normal for pets to have worms, but you can treat that buy finding out what kind of worms he has and looking online for a medication or talking to your vet. It's important to fast him for a day when he takes the medicine so the worms won't have nutrients and will die. These days you can purchase certain flea medications online (don't buy any at the store...they don't work).
As for your son, he could very well be allergic. Check his skin to see if he has rashes, and make sure you take him to the doctor. Try keeping him away from the puppy and make sure sweep up any hair your puppy may leave (bedding, carpet, etc...). Good luck, I hope he feels better.

It could be an allergy. Or it could be bacteria on his hands. Two year olds are very inquisitive and he could have had his hands near the puppy's rear end. I'd go to your doctor and have your son treated for both. Put the dog in somewhere tha he can't get out and disinfect your house in a solution that won't harm children. Treat the dog also. It's not his fault really. Also phone up the place where you got the puppy from and give them a telling off for putting your family's health at risk.

Try not to give your son the cough medicine, it will only suppress the cough but will not clear it. You see, people cough because they need to get rid of something that tickle their throat, it's a reflex action! Sounds like your son might be allergic to the puppy. I've never heard of worms that causes cough so it's a good suggestion to bring him to the doctor.

i live on post too and their is no such thing as same day appt for pediatrics, just as you said. Call the on post ER and ask to talk to a nurse, if they wont give you any info on the phone go ahead and take him to he ER if you are really worried. The on post ER isn't nearly as busy as a civilian ER.

I doubt it is worms from the dog. IT could be whooping cough or respiratory problem. something along those lines. Its been proven thou if people are exposed to pet dander at an EARLY age they will less likely develop allergies to pet dander.

Shouldn't you be asking a pediatrician this question? Why are you waiting?
