I hope you are only putting one in a bowl. They fight. I have a betta fish and this lil guy has been in a 2 ltr bowl since last Nov. He is doing well. I have no gravel, as it is easier to clean his bowl. I change it several times a month and feed him every few days. They really dont take much care.
Good luck

Go with the 5 gallon. The more space the better, and 1 gallon is definitely too small. (If five is too big, you can find some really nice 2.5 gallon tanks for about $10).
So...
•tank - $10
•fish - $4
•food (pellets and freeze-dried blood worms) - $5
•melafix/bettafix (good to have for new fish, as their fins are often torn or damaged) - $4
•water conditioner to get rid of chlorine before you put the fish in (AquaSafe in the yellow bottle) - $3.50
•decorations - $8 (you can improvise with the marbles you have at your house.. and bettas don't really need gravel, but it's good to keep cloth plants rooted). Don't get plastic plants! They rip their delicate fins.
Also, don't get a net either. It causes unecessary stress, and even the fine netting feels like sandpaper to them. When you clean the tank, just scoop him out into the cup he came in (or if he didn't come in a cup, dip him into a different cup). After the water is room temperature, pour little spoonfuls of it into the cup to get him acclimated. Do this once a minute for about 10 minutes and then dump the whole cup of water and fish back in.

I set up a pretty sweet betta tank for 25 bucks.
I got a square 2 1/2 gallon tank from PetSmart for $5
Gravel, fake plants $5
Betta Fish $4
Betta Food (I got it a year ago and I still have 90% of the container) $3
Fish Net $2
StressCoat (or other chlorine remover) $4
These aren't the exact prices, but they're close. If you live in an area that gets cold during winter, you may want to get a SMALL heater. Just be careful you don't turn it up too high (or get a heater for a large tank) because you don't want to make your fish into Betta Soup!
