I don't really see this as much of a rivalry. I'm sorry. I'm a lifelong Yankee fan, and I've always thought of the Red Sox as a cute retarded child that you just have to pull for.
The rage in this relationship is pretty one-sided. One ring in four score and seven years does not a hatred create. I don't hate the Red Sox, but so many of their fans are ignorant and annoying so I guess I see where your question is coming from.
Now, if you want a rivalry, look at the dodgers and the giants. These teams have been pretty even, and they've followed each other across the country to hate each other on a whole different coast. People get shot at those games. that's a rivalry. I've been to see yankees vs. red sox, and I've been to see giants vs. dodgers, and trust me, that one is a real rivalry.

Since the Red Sox sold the contract of Babe Ruth to the Yankees, the Yankee have won the penant (championship of the American League) and World Series (championship of Major League Baseball) MANY, MANY times, while the Red Sox have had a few good years here and there, but nothing remotely like that kind of success.
Over the past 5-10 years, the Red Sox and Yankees have been amoung the Elite teams each year, with the Yankees finished in first place in their division and the Red Sox finishing second.
In 2003, the Yankees defeated the Red Sox to advance to the World Series. In 2004, the Red Sox defeated the Yankees to advance to the World Series.
So it is a great rivalry between two fairly evenly matched teams.
Is the fan rivalry as intense? While we don't really have some of the fan violence that some knuckleheads engage in, there is certainly plenty of "trash talk" between the fans. So I'd say yes, it's probably on par/.

The rivalry is probably not as intense as it is among the English football hooligans. However, there is not a more heated rivalry in the United States for any sport. The rivalry has really taken on a life of it's own recently because the Red Sox are no an equal if not superior team, and good competition is what makes for a great rivalry. I think the other main reason that this rivalry /hatred exists is because of the geography. New Yorkers are always trying to exert their dominance over the region and they come to New England in the summer and crowd our beachers. "Damn leafers" any Family Guy fan should catch that one.

I definitely know being a Die Hard Red Sox fan that it started with Babe Ruth and the Curse of the Babino. But also partly because the Yankees are taking our players. Johnny Damon, helped the Red Sox in winning the 2004 world series and now he plays for the Yankees. Plus it's not fun being number two all the time. When you love a team you hate the opponent as much as possible. You want to be better then them. Are we taking it a little too far. Not really because we're scarred and it's perfectly normal to defend your team. Go BoSox!!!! Boston Fan for life!!!! The Yankees Suck!!!

The rivalry is REALLY intense!! The Red Sox and Yankees hate each other so much because it happened a long time ago when the Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees and Babe Ruth started playing better when he got to the Yankees. So, Babe Ruth wasn't doing well over in Boston. Then, the Red Sox got really, really mad at the Yankees because Babe Ruth was playing SOOOOO well over in New York. Trust me, it's GREAT to be a Yankees fan and it is NOT cool to be a Red Sox fan. GO YANKEES!!!!!!

Also a lifelong Yankees fan -
I feel the need to Agree with ol Pete. The hatred in this rivalry is largely one-sided. I don't sit around and stew about the Red Sox, but apparantly their fans stew about the Yankees constantly. I took a friend of mine to a Red Sox/ Devil Rays game in Tampa ( he is part of the Red Sox Nation) and anyways there was like 30,000 people at the game 25,000 of them Red Sox fans and all of the sudden in the 5th inning they all start in with the Yankees suck chant. The Yankees were not even there! Anyways I kindof feel bad for the Red Sox Fan because for 86 years they perfected the "please feel sorry for us, we're the underdog " attitude, and now that they finally won something, and are still a very powerful team it's funny to see how people are starting to hate them too. anyways I've babbled long enough

Well, I'm a big Yankee fan, and whenever I go to Boston I wear Yankee stuff, and let me tell you they want to KILL me! Boston fans are a lot ruder, I guess they just have low self esteem since their next title will be in 2090, but do they have to take it out on us? I mean we don't usually care what happens to them as long as we win...and no, it's not the same in New York. There's a lot less stuff there. And yes, Pete is right, Boston fans always attack us and stuff...but guess what? WE DON'T CARE! I don't even hate the Red Sox that much! All they are is an annoyance!

I believe this statement or question to be very un-true!! That's right you heard me right, un-true!!
One of my best friends ( from Long Island ) is a Red Sox fan and I don't hate him...my wife's best friend is marring a Red Sox fan and I don't hate him...why is there so much hate in the world? Yes, I hate some Red Sox PLAYERS...but I don't really hate the fans...just the ones that are rude and spoiled...they are the type of Red Sox fans I hate...or dislike...whichever you prefer...but as far and Yankee Fans hating Red Sox Fans...I guess the rude and spoiled Yankee and Red Sox Fans are the ones that hate each other...because I only know of one Red Sox Fan that I really dislike.
Let's all just get along and cheer for our favorite teams without yelling at each other...you like who you like!!
Peace!! :)

Same league/same pennant race so the rivalry is VERY intense and it isn't just between them anymore people love to hate the Yankees because they were on top for so long. Now people are loving it because they haven't won a World Series this decade.I don't remember this much hate for a team when Atlanta was doing it in the 90's but mostly because of Steinbrenner I think. GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
