Does anyone know the amps, watts and ohms required to split water into seperate Hydrogen and Oxygen molecules?

oops. i had volts in there, copied from top to bottom box. thanks. you'll get 10 tomorrow. have been toying with this idea a while. using wind or solar power to split salt water, save the hydrogen, remix in a PEM, for the electricity and pure water. 2 for 1. heheh.

Ironcially you left out the one unit you really need: voltage.

The voltage is the potential of the elecriticy to do work, and you need a certain energy to split the water. (1.2 V according to below article)

The amps is how much water you'll split in a given amount of time.

The watts is a function of volts*amps, so it's a derived quantity.

Ohms? The water will provide the ohmic load, don't add unecessary resistance or you waste energy.

The amount of recieved from combining the oxygen and hydrogen is about 10% which means you need to do ten times the work of the requirment of the device you would run with the hydrogen.
It works that way no matter how much energy you put into it.

If a windmill was making 5hp 24hrs a day, you could run a car for about half an hour each day off of that, which is actually pretty practical. some windmills make well over 20hp up to hundreds for the real big ones. Think of it this way: if a windmill is spinning a 20ft blade at 100rpm, it is recieving over 100hp. think of how much power a 100hp generator makes. that alot. much more than a car puts out because the car may be 100hp but you run it much lower, not even at 50hp. So really, if everybody had a windmill making hydrogen, they wouldnt need outside power.

Actually, some guy near me has a windmill that I see from the air every day I go up in the cessna. I should check it out.

Another thing: by actually building a hydrogen car, the amount of coal used to smelt the metal is more pollutive than everything a full sized suv puts out in its lifetime. It takes several tons of coal for every ton of metal smelted. an suv that gets 15mpg will only put out half of that in its lifetime. We should actually start using fields of windmills to smelt metal.
