Directly or via a router?

YOu need to driver disk for either the router or the DSL modem.

You then need to enter the password and username into your networking system.

Generally you go to the default page such as

http://192.168.1.1/

Then you have to set up your computer.

For a router the process is different. Yur mother should have set the router up.

Then you need to log into the router main page

This requries instructions for the router, it's similar.

Cable and DSL are designed for a SINGLE USER.

That means one computer.

You can't have two computers on the same line without a router.

A router, then becomes the SINGLE USER and routes the signal to multiple comptuers.

The DLS/Cable line see the router box and views it as a computer, because the route connects to their log-in with the username and password.

YOU then connect to the router page.

WIthout a router, you must disconnect the other computer, set your computer up for their username and password on the log-in and swtich lines for each computer.

Sometimes you still can't connect. This is due to problems in your networking or some piece of software (ad ware, malware) blocking the system.

You may need to to into the TCIP area and enter a fixed IP address or remove a fixed IP address

You need a TC/IP for the router or DSL modem, especially if you have a dial up modem already on the system. You need a second TC/IP set up for the DSL modem or router.

Once you get connected your system should handle the rest. My AOL dial up automatically saw my DSL internet connection and lets me use it instead of the dail up system.

Well, you can shut down everything. Unplug the modem.
Then wait a minute or so. Plug the modem back, turn on your PC and try it then. Should work.

I'm afraid you'll need to install the dialer that your moms ISP provided her with. Please check out with your mom how she loaded this before you take her computer down.

If you've already taken it down and don't have access to this, then, you've no other choice but to ask the ISP for this, because without it, you can't connect to the net.

Cheers

At the worst, you might have to change some network settings, but it will hopefully just pop right in.
