they will run in it eventually. they may get in it at night when you are not watching them. once they start they usually really like it and then won't stop.
try putting a treat in the wheel and then when they get in it they will start moving around and then start running.

I don't have a gerbil but I do have 4 hamsters. Anyhow 1 of my hamsters doesn't like the wheel either. I have to put her in the ball and let her run around the house for 15 minutes. :)

I'm not sure, but you could put some food on top of the wheel, and the only way for them to get it down is to run on the wheel. They might run on the wheel more often that wa. My hamster just ran on the wheel because she thought it was fun. I also got her a *roaming* ball. She got a lot of excersize running around the kitchen with in it. GOOD LUCK!!!

Some gerbils are just lazy. I had a gerbil named Toby who would just push his wheel over and then cover it with his litter. Some gerbils are wheel runners, and some are not. But if you do want them to get some type of exercise, get one of those balls that you put them in and they can roll around on the floor. That's what my gerbil Toby liked.

is it a plastic wheel? i know my gerbils refused to run on a slippery plastic wheel. I bought them a metal wheel. It is a sturdy wheel, that has thinner wire that is criss crossed so they cant hurt their tail, unlike other wheels that just have the bars going across.

just keep it in there they will figure it out
did you get one that is in-closed? is it plastic all the way around, other wise it can get it's tail hurt in the wheel.
