Is there a free program (programme) out there, that will allow me to convert a name e.g. MARTIN, into a fancy shaped and colourful LOGO?

The Gimp is the legal freeware version of Photoshop 7, but its not quite as easy to learn. You'll need a manual, and theres a lot to go through before you'll know enough to be able to make your logo. If you don't want to do this kind of thing regularly thats a lot of effort.
There are also several different concepts to learn, such as working with seperate layers, (eg background layer, text layer), merging layers, saving for print and saving for the web and screen. Print images need to be large to get the detail, web images need to be optimised so they download faster.

An easier method for a simple graphic like this is to download and install paint.net. Its a legal freeware program designed by university students sponsored by Microsoft. The link is provided below. Its a lot easier to learn and use than The Gimp.
The basic method is;
Make a new document the size you want your graphic, eg 100 x100 pixels at a resolution of 72 dpi.
Use a background layer.
Add a new layer and open the text tool.
Click and drag to draw the text box.
Try some different fonts and sizes until you find one you like.
Write the word in black.
Select the black area with the magic wand.
Now any special effect you add will only be applied to the selected area, not the background.
Copy the text layer so you have some different options to play with.
When you're happy with the effect, delete the unused layers.
Flatten the graphic and save a copy as 'save for web' to reduce the filesize..

You can try using the GIMP (www.gimp.org) and using some of the built-in filters on the text. other than that I think you will find that most decent logos are designed and not automatically created.
