I have this very bad cold for the last 2 weeks, which caused me to constantly blow my nose. Until one week ago, I realised that my left ear was blocked, and I've been hearing this high frequency sound in my ear. It feels terrible and I'm concerned it will cause long term damage. Any cause for alarm?

Hi! I'm an Audiologist.

When you blow your nose with lots of pressure, you can force air (and sometimes mucus) up the Eustachian tube into the middle ear space. If you really push it, you can even make yourself dizzy.

Tinnitus is any noise that is heard only in you ear or head. It is made louder when your ear is blocked because of the increased blood flow to the area, and the fact that the sounds around you are muffled so they are not drowning it out the way they normally might.

If you have pain, fever or dizziness, see the doctor ASAP. If the blockage persists for more than a week, despite taking decongestants for the cold, see the doctor.

Humidifiers and breathing in steam can help open the blocked passages -- even some of the menthol/eucalyptus cough drops can help you get some temporary relief. But if it isn't responding to the over-the-counter treatments, you may need something stronger.

Permanent damage can happen, but only if you allow it to get to the point that the eardrum ruptures, or if fluid is in the middle ear space for many months and starts to degrade the tiny bones (ossicles) inside, or if you allow the infection to spread into the sinuses of the mastoid area. Most people would not tolerate the symptoms long enough for it to go that far, because our ears are very tender.

YES! it can, this has happened to me before, blowing too hard can blow the mucus into your ear canal and block it causing pain, if this is what is causing it then a solution would be applying a hot pack over your ear to dry the mucus, bringing relief. if your ear is not plugged then it is probably just the pressure of blowing your nose. i would avoid blowing it or blowing it very gently. it is most likely not an infection i would try the hot pack and if that does not bring relief then see a doctor.

Sounds like your sinus is congested........inhale over a hot bowl of water with menthol added do this 3 times a day........gently blow your nose. It should clear up in a day or two. Your ears, nose and throat are all connected... the noise you are hearing is tinnitus and it won't damage your ears in the long run. Ive had tinnitus for 35 years now.

It seems like a case of tinnitis (swolen ear drums). This can be caused by sinus blockage which is consistent with your nose blowing. The blockages in the sinus passages near your ears are not being cleared with the blowing of the nose. A decongestant may be the way to go if you can take one.

If you blow your nose to hard it can cause your ear to block...you really should go see a doctor because of the "terrible feeling" you have
