For a lot of them it's Ireland still divided, and over 800 years of war and too many dead! But you'll find most people in Ireland are a bit more intelligent to hate a nation as a whole! They take people as they find them. There are nice people in England just as there are balloon heads there same as Ireland, Scotland, anywhere else in the world! So you shouldn't generalise because most people i know in Ireland, where i live, and i'm British, are not xenophobists! Anyway how many English jokes do your hear coming from Scotland as opposed to Irish jokes coming from England?

Only some do and vica versa. I get to see both sides as I have an irish dad but I was born and I live in england. I have quite a few irish friends and go to ireland as often as I can. To be honest most of us all love each other to bits. There's plenty of raggin which goes on but it's all pretty friendly.
Slightly more seriously, and these are my irish friends words not mine.....they can't stand the people who come out drunk on a friday night swearing violence and revenge, singing patriotic songs...but wouldn't in reality be seen or have anything to do with 'freedom fighters' or terrorists. I had a discussion one night with one friend in Galway, and with regards to past hurts and humiliations by the english he had this to say...the irish may have been oppressed, but so were the the english, doesn't matter what city you come from, galway, dublin, london, birmingham...the ordinary folk are all in the same position, if you want to blame someone..blame those in power. And don't forget, with regards to the famine and turfing people of land, alot of irish people turned on their own. You can't romantasize this kind of thing, like all terrible occurances, whether it be war and occupation or famine, it brings out the best and the worst in everyone no matter what race you are.
It's a shame that all the english get tarred with the same brush, just because of what the poeple in power have done or are doing. What about the rest of us? We're all really lovely and friendly..honestly.

Centuries of occupation and abuse basically.
Check out some of these films/books - dont worry nothing subversive that could get you arrested by MI5!
In the Name of the Father (Book by Gerry Conlon, film starring Daniel Day-Lewis)
Michael Collins (starring Liam Neeson)
Rebel Heart (BBC production)
The Wind that Stirs the Barley
Translations - Brian Friel
These might help. Lucky enough most English cosider the Irish to be cuddly now as there is a new foe on the loose that wants to blow everyone up not just English people or polieman and politicians. Hurrah for the tricolor!

Lets face it, almost everyone in the entire bloody world hates us. Probably to do with our having fought wars against almost all of the countries in Europe and plenty beyond. Maybe to do with our perceived barbarism, I know that was prevelent in bygone times, maybe it has lingered on.
Given the actions of our modern day footballers I wouldn't be suprised.
Generally, we've managed get at bloody everyone in one way or another. But don't worry, we hate quite a lot of the world back, especially the parts that hate us most.
I don't think anyone over here particullarly hates the Irish though. Scots, welsh, french etc yes, but the Irish aren't usually idntified as people we hate. If it's because of Northern Ireland, most of the people there wanted to stay British, and at least we didn't go around blowing up civillians like the IRA did.

No, i does not say so. Many ought to dislike the British occupation of northern eire and some ought to carry a grudge over centuries of occupation, rape, pillage, homicide, oppression etc yet interior the completed no, Irish people do not dislike English people.

the irish dislike the english because of what happiened hundreds of years ago!!The queen coming to ireland and taking it over!!!Another reason is the trouble in the north, which too goes back in history.

very hard question. i think most of the hatred started when the monarchy used to give land to lords and most of them were abusive to the Irish on the land they owned..what is sad is that this hatred still continues today. i have a Scottish father and English/Irish mother so i like them all.
