Unless the person who is the "guest" is your life-long best friend, or some really close family member you see often it's rude. (Even so, you'd want to finish you're conversation quickly, so as not to appear like your ignoring your guest)

Another exception would be if it is a long distance call, one you cant return easily (like a dif. country, or if you are talking to your boss)...then you should ask the person on the phone to hold on for a second, and tell your guest who you are talking to and explain that you need to finish the call. then when you are finished apologise to your guest and then only pay attention to her...if the phone rings when they are there...dont answer it...let the machine get it.

If a guest arrives WHILE you are in the middle of a conversation, it is perfectly fine to continue the conversation.
For that matter, it is proper for the guest to leave the room for the duration of your call.

If you receive a call AFTER the guest has arrived, it is proper to either:
1. NOT answer the phone, or;
2. as the guest to excuse you for a moment and answer the phone and tell the caller that you have company and that you will ring them back after the guest leaves.

It's the law of who was there first.

It depends on the guest, if its someone that you are very close to and see often, they should understand that you will be just a few minutes on the phone. But keep it at that, a few minutes.

I would tell the caller that you'll call them back as soon as you can as a guest just arrived. I'm sure the caller will understand. =)

Yes it is. You should try to end the call asap or ask the person to call you back at a better time.

I think it is rude unless it is a emergency or something. You can tell them you will call them back or they can call you back later.

I think it's rude. Ask the caller if you can call them back.
