The well-known franchises are very expensive - a McDonalds will cost you around $1 million USD, and the other big ones are similarly priced. A McDonalds in a well placed position is practically a license to print money though.
The lesser known franchises are very speculative - you can't know for sure whether the company will even be around in a few years.
Many franchises like to trumpet the "fact" that the success rate of franchisees is around 80%. I've heard that some recent studies actually show that they succeed at the same rate as any other business though.
