Yes, animal red blood cells lack a nucleus. As it states from "http://www.purchon.com/biology/animal.htm"

"I hope that you have learnt that all animal cells have a cell membrane, cytoplasm and a nucleus (red blood cells excepted) and that cells are specialised to do different jobs. A biologist would say that 'their structures are related to their functions'."

Animal cells are not much different from human cells so we also lack a nucleus in our red blood cells.

Red blood cells have a nucleus when they are first formed. This is the reticulocyte stage. They later loose the nucleus. The red cells of birds and some fish keep their nucleus through their entire lifetime.

The reason that a red blood cell doesn't have a nucleus is that it would take up much needed space of Oxygen. You take out the nucleus that isn't needed and boom, more space for more oxygen! Thats my logical thinking! Don't know if that is 100% though! I have been wrong before(Once back in 1998).
