Whats it all about? The police know straight away if your car is in tax or not from your licence plate as it is all computerised anyway. So why should it be against the law not to have it on show?

Where are you? Canada? We don't have that here.

So they can tell straight away. It would be a huge waste of time if they had to input the details for every car they see, the police already waste enough time on paperwork. If you don't have tax then you probably don't have insurance and an MOT either so it's very serious.

You might have to specify you are talking about UK law...you are confusing the Americans...

Because they can see at a glance if the tax is valid. Do you think they'd have the time to check every vehicle otherwise? At least they can identify suspicious cars quickly!

There are too many drivers on our roads with no tax, no insurance, no MOT and no driving licence! There should be more spot checks and more penalties to protect those of us who are legally on the road!!!! (Rant over...).

Your tax disc is proof that your vehicle theoretically is safe to be on the public highway, it is also physical proof that you have paid to use the highways for the term of your disc, failure to display means that the dibble wandering the pavements looking for someone to extort money from can serve a penalty notice to you without the need for any computer equipment.

Yes, charleymac, the Yanks ARE easily confused!!You R wrong about the Ins. and MOT though. That ids part of the propaganda to hoodwink people like U & thatchinnorgirl who have been brainwashed! WELL done Beach Babe - VERY droll!! Like MattP bit about the "dibbles"- I would add that they R not all comp. literate - or even literate!!
Finally, it is just yet another scheme for obtaining money whilst costing even more to implement! Add it to petrol VAT then nobody can escape paying it and it SHOULD cost us less that way!!

License plates can be stolen. Unless the cop wants to spend time using his patrol car's computer and running every plate he sees, it's a lot easier to spot a missing sticker or one that has obviously been removed and reattached.

You have a point, but not all police cars are equipped with these computers, so if they were just passing by they could still tell if your tax is out of date or not.

Because it's more obvious if you don't have it on display, rather than having to type in your registration into some computer.

What's the problem with putting a little paper disc on your windscreen anyway?

it will take too much time and effort to pass a law changing the rules about tax discs- i think there are more pressing matters for MP's to deal with right at this moment- like having sex with their secretraries and bringing multi-million casinos to the UK

That's a fair point...maybe it will be abolished?

By the way you first lot of people that answered, this is the UK version of Yahoo Answers, does that help you out at all?

the law is still in place so you have to stick to it or get in trouble.
