"smart" is a very broad word. Smartness is how you appeal to people. The word smart should be changed to "I care and take my time to be correct." That is the only thing you have to do to make people think you are smart. Ok, here is a good example...
Pick out the smart person from these two sentences:
1. I went to the stor and bougt some bread.
2. I went to the store and bought some bread.
See the first person looks really dumb.... and that is just because they were probably typing too fast and they didn't bother to use spell check if they weren't sure how to spell things. Words that simple shouldn't be misspelled so people assume you are dumb! Do you see what I am saying?
Now if you are talking about something like grades in school.... you need to study hard, do your best, and take your time. You will get lazy at times and just do your homework well enough to pass, but those habits stay with you and it is very hard to break them. So you should start developing good habits early!
*****Fact: All of the habits you develope before age 25 are almost impossible to break. That is why most people who smoke at a very young age, really can't quit!

Several american and japanese children were asked this this very same question in a study. The American kids said you are born either smart or dumb. The Japanese kids said that you must study to be smart.
