Come on, look deep within...you have to have some experience or skill.

Are you caring? Maybe a nurses assistant, elderly home.

Are you quick & sociable? How about waitressing? I made good money waiting tables.

Are you persuesive? Try sales.

You're good at something, figure it out and go from there.

A decent job? That depends on your definition of "decent."

Your best bet is to go to your state employment agency and take the tests they have there. They may be able to assist you in getting an entry-level job in the area which their testing shows you would be strong in.

If you have any higher-level education, be sure to let them know about that.

While there are laws protecting persons 40 and older against age discrimination(1), in your case it would be easy for an employer to claim that 18-year old they hired instead of you was a better match for the job for other factors, such as more recently having attended school and having more familiarity with, for example, the computers in use at the employer, or having been exposed to more advanced mathematics, or any number of things.

Remember, just like a teenager or someone in his 20s (like a recent college graduate) entering the workfield for the first time-- you're not going to get that dream job or maybe even a "decent" job the first time. Your best bet is to get your foot in at a good company with whatever job you're willing to do and demonstrate that you're worth promoting within that department or being moved to a better one.

Good luck!

What do you consider a decent job? What line of work are you considering? What kind of pay are you going to need? All factors to consider. Depending on what you have been doing all these years, you will be able to figure out what you are good at, then you can start looking in that general direction. You might just be surprised at what you are capable of doing!

Try going thru a temp agency. Find a reputable one in your area. They'll test you for proficiency in various programs, and if your skills match their needs, you may get placed with one of their contract companies. I don't know where you live but it isn't unusual for someone in the D.C. area to be hired as a temp and take home $16/hr.

Hey there, if you contact your local unemployment office they should be able to put you in touch with a 'back to work' course. That would help build your confidence and your job skills at the same time.
