Send the person a file such as a picture via the chat program. When you’re sure they’ve opened the file, open the dos command prompt (start -> run -> cmd). In the prompt, type netstat –n
The last entry will show you the sender’s IP address.

or
Ask the person to send you an email. Once you receive their email, all you have to do is look at it’s header. To do this in gmail, open the email they sent you, click on “more options”, then “show original”

The header should look like this:

X-Gmail-Received: 098wadljkhscnqo33102983safdjasd
Delivered-To: rhine@randamu.com
Received: by YY.YYY.YY.YYY with SMTP id poaisd230498;
Wed, 14 Jun 2006 16:35:01 -0700 (PDT)
Received: by YYY.YY.YYY.YY with SMTP id aspd0983214lkjas;
Wed, 14 Jun 2006 16:35:00 -0700 (PDT)
Return-Path:
Received: from futures.bc.ca ([XXX.XXX.XX.XXX])

The XXX.XXX.XX.XXX is the sender’s IP address

In Hotmail, click “Options” -> “Mail”-> “Mail Display Settings” -> “Message Headers” -> and set to Advance. The header will look like this:

MIME-Version: 1.0
X-Originating-IP: [XXX.XXX.XX.XXX]
X-Originating-Email: [someone@someone.ca]
X-Sender: someone@someone.ca
Received: from XXX.XXX.XX.XXX by asdkj23.hotmail.msn.com with HTTP;Wed, 11 Jun 2006 17:16:41 GMT

Again, XXX.XXX.XX.XXX is the sender’s IP.

You can then use the IP at IPLocator to find more information about the person, such as their approximate location.
